Geschiedenis van de Librije<\/h2>\n

De stad Enkhuizen telt vele monumenten die herinneren aan haar grootse verleden. E\u00e9n monument leidde tot voor kort een tamelijk verborgen bestaan: de Librije in de Westerkerk.<\/p>\n

Dit is de oudste nog in originele staat bewaard gebleven\u00a0 <\/span>17de eeuwse stadsbibliotheek van Nederland. Elke bezoeker die in het Zuidportaal van de kerk de wenteltrap naar boven betreedt, waant zich 400 jaar terug in de tijd.<\/p>\n

Zo\u2019n 600 in perkament of leer gebonden boeken wachten daar al eeuwen om gelezen of bewonderd te worden.<\/p>\n

Aanbouw Westerkerk<\/h2>\n

De geschiedenis van de Librije gaat terug tot het einde van de 16de eeuw. De overdracht van het legaat boeken van predikant Gerardus Vesterman aan de kerkelijke gemeente in 1588 heeft bij de stichting een rol gespeeld.<\/p>\n

De Enkhuizer stadsdokter Bernardus Paludanus (1550-1633) heeft waarschijnlijk de aanbouw aan de kerk ten behoeve van de stadsbibliotheeek gestimuleerd.<\/p>\n
